Hunei District is famed for eel production, which was first introduced in 1987. It was regarded as one of the three major eel production regions in Taiwan along side Pingtung’s Donggang and Jhanghua’s Fusing. During its heyday in 1992, the breeding area covered nearly 1,200 hectares. Although only 200 hectares remain now, it is still an important base for eel production in the former Kaohsiung County. The Hunei District Farmers’ Association places the eels into vacuum packed, exquisite Pushao Eel gift sets;, even former President Chen Shuei-bian and current President Ma Ying-jiou praised the product after tasting it.
